The word Podcast' is a mix of the words iPod' and broadcast although you don't need an iPod or any other MP3 player to listen to a podcast. Most computers nowadays come with some sort of audio software, such as Windows Media Player for example. Podcasting is a type of online media delivery, but completely different to any that have existed previously. Podcasting allows you to download files via an RSS feed onto your computer and MP3 player. These files can be music, talk shows, news, shows from mainstream media such as the BBC and so on. Podcasts cover hundreds if not thousands of subjects and you're bound to find a good few to include your own interest. The main characteristic about podcasting is that you can freely subscribe to a series of podcasts so that they automatically download to your computer and MP3 player and then you can listen to your chosen podcasts conveniently whenever you want. Of course you can simply just download the MP3 files to your computer from a podcast site if you wish and then play them when convenient for you, but it's the RSS / subscription facility that really brings podcasting to the fore as an "on-demand" and "timeshift" medium. By using podcatching software to subscribe to your favourite podcasts, your chosen podcasts will then be automatically downloaded for you without you needing to visit the providing website at all.
